Laleh Khalili on Shipping and Global Capitalism

Laleh Khalili is professor of international politics at Queen Mary University of London and author of Sinews of War and Trade: Shipping and Capitalism in the Arabian Peninsula (Verso 2020), Heroes and Martyrs of Palestine (Cambridge 2007) and Time in the Shadows: Confinement in Counterinsurgencies (Stanford 2013).

Dr. Nettrice R. Gaskins on Art and Artificial Intelligence

Dr. Nettrice R. Gaskins is an African American digital artist, academic, cultural critic and advocate of STEAM fields. In her work she explores "techno-vernacular creativity" and Afrofuturism. Dr. Gaskins’ work explores how to generate art using algorithms in different ways, especially through coding. She also teaches, writes, "fabs" or makes, and does other things. She has taught multimedia, computational media, visual art, and even Advanced Placement Computer Science Principles with high school students who majored in the arts. She earned a BFA in Computer Graphics with Honors from Pratt Institute in 1992 and an MFA in Art and Technology from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1994. She received a doctorate in Digital Media from Georgia Tech in 2014. She has taught at the secondary and post-secondary levels in the Boston Public Schools and at Massachusetts College of Art and Design. Currently, Dr. Gaskins is the assistant director of the Lesley STEAM Learning Lab at Lesley University. She will publish her first full-length book through The MIT Press.

Desiree Desierto on Monopoly Rents, Trade and Sunken Treasure

Desiree Desierto is an affiliate faculty at George Mason University. She was a postdoctoral associate at the W. Allen Wallis Institute of Political Economy at the University of Rochester. She has a PhD in Political Science from the University of Wisconsin, Madison and a PhD in Economics from the University of Nottingham. Carola Frydman On the Economic Impact of the 1918 Influenza

Carola Frydman is a Professor of Finance at the Kellogg School of Management. Professor Frydman's research focuses on American business history. Recent research projects examine the evolution of financial markets during the early twentieth century, with special emphasis on the role of financial intermediaries for firm growth, and on financial crises. She has also studied the long-run trends in executive compensation, the market for managers, and corporate governance. Her work has been published at journals such as the American Economic Review, the Journal of Political Economy, the Journal of Financial Economics, and the Journal of Economic History, and featured in The Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, and The Economist. She is on the Editorial Board of Explorations in Economic History, the Journal of Economic History, and of the Review Studies in Corporate Finance. Prior to joining Kellogg, Professor Frydman was an Assistant Professor of Finance at the MIT Sloan School of Management (2006-2011) and an Assistant Professor of Economics at Boston University (2011-2016). She holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Harvard University, and B.A. and M.A. degrees in Economics from Universidad de San Andres, Argentina, and is a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research.

Jesse Bruhn on Charter Schools

Jesse Bruhn is an Assistant Professor of Economics at Brown University and an affiliate of the Annenberg Institute. Prior to joining the economics department at Brown, he spent a year as a post-doctoral fellow in the Industrial Relations Section at Princeton University. In 2019, he received his Ph.D. from Boston University. Jesse is a labor economist who studies the economics of education (teacher labor markets, educator effectiveness, school choice) and the economics of crime (street gangs). Prior to his career as an economist, Jesse spent four years on active duty in the United States Army and one year as a Mathematics Educator in the Springfield, MA, public school system.

Daniel Gallardo Albarrán on Global Economic Inequality

Daniel Gallardo Albarrán completed his Ph. D. at the University of Groningen in 2018 with a thesis entitled Health, well-being and inequality over the long term. He currently works as a postdoctoral researcher at the Rural and Environmental History Group at Wageningen University. His research focuses on the determinants of living standards over the long term and the impact of public health measures on health outcomes.

Bruno Caprettini on Patriotism, The New Deal and the Rage Against the Machines

Bruno Caprettini is a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Department of Economics of the University of Zurich. He earned his Ph.D. in economics at Universitat Pompeu Fabra (Barcelona) in 2015. In August 2017 he won a 4-years grant offered by the Swiss National Foundation: the Ambizione grant. His research interests include development economics and economic history. His work appeared on the American Economic Review.
